Meditations with the Navajo: Prayers, Songs and Stories of Healing and Harmony
Collected by Gerald Hausman
Illustrations by Sid Hausman
TBear & Company/Inner Traditions
This classic collection has been reprinted almost every year for more than two decades. It is the summation of Gerald's
work as a collector of myths and legends. The meditations with Navajo friends capture the essence of the Navajo way of
life, which is one of harmony and beauty. Gerald's long association with the painter Jooghi(Bluejay)DeGroat, whose father
was a medicine man, led him down many paths while the two friends worked together. The stories emphasize the true meaning
of life--the most important thing on the circle that has no beginning or end is where we stand at the moment.
"Navajo myths are among the most poetic in the world, full of dazzling word imagery. Hausman's meditations are likewise
sheer poetry, "traveling on sunbeams" about men who "cup stars on their palms", having their bare feet tickled by snake's
tongues."
- Richard Erdoes, Co-author of Lame Deer, Seeker of Visions, and Lakota Woman

MEDITATIONS WITH ANIMALS
A Native American Bestiary
By Gerald Hausman
Bear and Co., an Inner Traditions Paperback
Powerful meditations drawn from Native American legends, Meditations
with Animals has been continually in print since the mid-eighties. It
is a book that brings forth the ancient animal spirits and connects them
with the real life animals of today. In the words of a 101-year-old Santo
Domingo elder, 'Tell the poet he hit the true vein...the old ways are
still our ways, and they will never die.' This book has been a classroom
favorite for fifteen years.
"These quiet presentations of spirituality are remarkable for their
immediacy and clarity."
- Publishers Weekly
"This is a unique little book; part of it is traditional native American chants and stories from various tribes,
taken from interviews for the Bureau of Ethnology Reports. However, the author also provides his own meditations on these tales.
The meditations are mindful of the ecological disasters that are destroying the world, piece by piece, as well as humanity's
increasing detachment from Nature."
- Review by Lupa, Facing North, A Community Resource
"Rediscover the universal language of song and dance. For the moment, abandon scientific logical thinking and reason
in favor of intuition and spontaneity. Hausman shares his insights and invites you to read about Spirit feathers, Warning of the
Owl, Deer Woman, Spirit Grizzly, and Swimmer the Salmon."

THE METAPHYSICAL CAT
Tales of Cats and Their Humans
By Gerald & Loretta Hausman
Hampton Roads Publishing Company, Inc.; All ages
The Hausmans have a special rapport with felines and have created a collection
of stories about the arcane side of cats. The writings, cleverly shaped
around the verses of 18th century English poet Christopher Smart, deal
with cats' psychic abilities, telepathic powers, astral comings and goings,
history and behavior, and relationships with the inferior life forms who
share their earthly environment.
"Anyone believing that cats live in another dimension will relish
The Metaphysical Cat: Tales of Cats and Their Humans. The book reveals
felines' supernatural, mystical, metaphysical side, combining newspaper
stories, sketches and personal anecdotes from the authors' lives to humorously
yet seriously describe the mystical role that cats have in society and
in history."

THE MYTHOLOGY OF CATS
Feline Legend and Lore Through the Ages
By Gerald & Loretta Hausman
St. Martin's Press, a Griffin Paperback
It's commonly known that cats have been the familiars of witches and
that they possess nine lives. However, this unusual breed-specific volume
seeks to unravel the other myths that cats were once famous for...caretakers,
healers, spirit guides, harbingers of good luck, martyrs, and deities.
The authors spent two decades researching this book and they complement
their scholarship with humorous anecdotes and fun folklore. Hemingway's
seven-toed Key West cats are covered in fine fashion along with Boise,
his favorite from the Finca Vigia in Cuba. Also, a chapter is devoted
to Jack Kerouac's favorite cat, Tyke, without whom he was miserable. All
in all, a celebration of feline friends.
"It is extremely difficult to sift through the 30 different
personalities and almost as many breeds before succumbing to temptation
and bringing home a mewing kitten."

By Gerald & Loretta Hausman
St. Martin's Press, a Griffin Paperback

rendered by the authors' illustrator daughter, Mariah Fox. Much of the

to Komondor to Corgi and from Wolfhound to Yorky, the book abounds in
information that is fun to read, but is also a valuable tool for research.

TUNKASHILA
From the Birth of Turtle Island to the Blood of Wounded Knee
By Gerald Hausman
with illustrations by Sid Hausman, Mariah Fox & Bluejay DeGroat
St. Martin's Press, a Griffin Paperback
A mythological version of the history of North America. Based on hundreds
of interviews with Native Americans and using a forceful, poetic language
suggestive of another time, this exciting novelistic approach to history
brings Native American mythology to life at the same time. As N. Scott
Momaday, the Pulitzer prize winning Kiowa poet has said, 'Tunkashila is
a book to be read slowly and with deep respect... it is like the wind
one hears on the plains, steady, running, full of music.' Tunkashila captures
the curiosity of youth and reveals the urgent moral tales of a lost civilization.
"An eloquent tribute to the first great storytellers of America."

EDWARD S. CURTIS
The Uncollected Writings and Photography
Edited by Gerald Hausman & Bob Kapoun
St. Martin's Press, a Griffin Paperback
243 unknown images are presented in this historical masterpiece. Photo
archivist Bob Kapoun hand-gathered the unusual unpublished photographs
of Edward S. Curtis at the Smithsonian Institution. In addition, the text
is culled by Gerald Hausman from all of the major volumes of The North
American Indian by Curtis. These editions, published in limited numbers
from the turn of the last century to the 1930s, are virtually undiscovered
treasure troves of Indian lore and mythology. Hausman's work, like Kapoun's,
has made it easier to see the great photographer at work, as a writer
as well as a picture taker. The stories which Curtis gathered from Native
American elders are useful as read-alouds for children.
"A handsome postscript to the photographer/ethnologist's career."

THE SUN HORSE
Native Visions of the New World
By Gerald Hausman
Introduction by Charles Dailey, The Museum of American Indian Arts
Lotus Light Paperback
This is a visionary anthology of Native American spirituality from the
17th century to the present. Included are speeches given by Indian elders
and poems written by tribal people today. The accompanying art was selected
at the museum archive of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa
Fe. From the story of Deer Boy told by a San Juan Pueblo woman to the
story of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the presence of mermaids in Biloxi
Bay, The Sun Horse is a living tribute to the past and the present of
native people in America. Another book that has found a place on the wisdom
shelf of many classrooms.
"Gerald Hausman is a unique individual because he, like my students,
is quietly sensitive to the world about him. His words are worthy because
he can touch the feelings of those he writes about, whether these are
feelings of pain, joy, anger, or just life in general."
- Charles Dailey, Professor of Museum Studies

THE KEBRA NAGAST
Edited by Gerald Hausman with introduction by Ziggy Marley
St. Martin's Press
A new edition of the Ethiopian text that shows the true relationship
between Solomon and Sheba and their son Menyelik. The story is written
in what Booklist called 'awed tones and full of the lilt of roots, reggae
lyrics...' Whether it is read as an ancient adventure story, a philosophical
ramble on the origins of 'black Jesus', or as a beautiful tone poem, The
Kebra Nagast gives a very different, African slant to the King James version
of the Bible.
"A wonderful new book... An appendix includes several famous passages
from the works of Rastafarian prophet Bob Marley, and quotes the relevant
parts of the Bible from which they were adapted. But my favorite parts
of the book, frankly, are the sections that Hausman, a ten year resident
of Jamaica, wrote himself, about his encounters with members of the faith."
- Roger Steffens, Reggae Archivist and editor of Ras Rojah's Daily Diary
